Barrett sponsors Police Week resolution

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Senate has approved Sen. Tom Barrett’s resolution recognizing May 12-18 as Police Week.

“Our law enforcement officers deserve our appreciation and respect for the bravery and reliability they exhibit each and every day as they put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe and respond in times of crisis,” said Barrett, R-Charlotte. “Sadly, last year 158 of these brave men and women nationwide never returned home.

“Police Week offers us an opportunity to honor and remember those officers who were killed in the line of duty, as well as the family, friends and fellow officers they left behind.”

In 1962, to salute the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and their families, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week on which it falls as National Police Week.

Senate Resolution 46 says that there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the U.S, including over 22,000 full-time uniformed law enforcement officers in Michigan, including corrections officers. These dedicated individuals serve in more than 600 state, county and local departments and facilities.

“Members of law enforcement willingly put their lives at risk to protect us — work that is often dangerous and too often ends in tragedy,” Barrett said. “We are blessed to have outstanding and selfless officers here in Michigan, and I encourage residents to thank them for all they do to make our state and communities safe.”

This year, the names of 371 officers will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. The newly engraved names include those of the 158 officers killed in 2018 and an additional 213 officers who died in previous years.

Residents can see the names added to the memorial at www.LawMemorial.org/2019RollCall.
